CAUTION: Fat Girl Running!

Although Dead Girl Running might have been just as appropriate a title.  It seems my almost two years of run-free time is now ending.  I’ve spent the better part of my last year and a half eating what I want, not exercising and not caring very much.  Originally, I stopped running and training because of a bad knee injury.  That is long gone.  No excuses left, except that my long distance runner went off to college, and I didn’t even have that to motivate me. 

Nothing like a few vacation photos to get yourself back on track.  See, in December I took my first cruise.  I took shorts and a swimsuit, figuring I knew no one else on the boat, except who I was going with.  At 50, I really shouldn’t care anymore what people think, but somehow it gets into my head and plays with me.

The World at Large

And how was your 2013?  I haven’t posted in a long time – you can probably guess why!  This blog is about eating right and working out, neither of which I did during the year of 2013.  I pretty much ate my way through the year, in fact.  Well, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but I didn’t pay attention to what I ate either.  But, let’s start at the beginning.

Just a Little Taste…..

I bet you thought this post was going to be about food, didn’t you?  Well, it is partially.  However, I’m referring to spring.  Here in the midwest, Mother Nature has decided to give us just a little taste of spring with weekend temperatures in the 50s and 60s.  

I haven’t put my running shoes on since the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day.  Even though we sprang forward in time this morning, I think I’m probably back to being at a “normal” time.  When I woke up, my clock said 6 AM – ahhh, awake at my normal 5!  I did lay in bed awhile, and knew today I’d be hitting the trail. Snug As A Bug…..

Living in the Midwest, I truly understand why bears (which we don’t have here) hibernate.  The winter days are short and I leave for work in the cold and dark and return home the same way.  The cold, dreary days of Cleveland make you want to hibernate in your bed and not come out until springtime.  

For most of us, that’s not an option.  I walk a good part of my commute in downtown during all four seasons, including winter.  That usually means trudging unshoveled sidewalks and streets.  I try to tell myself it’s a decent leg workout for the legs that aren’t running right now! (more…)

I know I’ve been lax in posting and my apologies.  Life seems to have gotten in my way!  I’ve been so busy, I barely have time to breathe most days.

The Number on the Scale Isn’t Everything

I am the queen of dieting, literally.  I know what I am supposed to do and when I’m supposed to do it.  That is probably what makes this last year or so very frustrating.  The weight should be dropping of me,  and yet, it hasn’t.  I never believed in the middle age spread until well, I hit middle age.  My already slow metabolism has slowed even more.

This doesn’t mean I haven’t had any success.  Not by a long shot as I discovered this week.   (more…)

Belly On Up

I know I am an emotional eater – I’m constantly trying to change that. I have times when I’m very reflective before I put something in my mouth, wondering the why and “how I’m feeling” moments of doing what I’m doing.  Many times it’s just eating – I eat when I’m stressed or happy, when I’m sad or bored and more often, when I’m depressed.  I don’t need something major to happen, for me, it’s a comfort.  Other people have their own vices; as long as I can remember it’s been food. The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

Autumn is my favorite time of year, the cooler days and cooler nights.  My air conditioning and furnace get a break from working, and I enjoy the really cool evenings.  I’ve often said I’m a woman who doesn’t like extremes – I dislike the summers and winters in Cleveland, both are usually too extreme for me.  This past summer was brutally hot, which makes me think that the coming winter will be just as brutal (1988 flashes through my mind of the hot and cold extremes, I hope our winter isn’t like that).

Food Intervention

Quite simply, my eating this past week was awful, simply awful.  If there was ever a week when there was zero planning, this was it.  Most of you know by now I tend to stay away on an “off” week.  I decided that maybe I can learn from my mistakes by posting this week and share with you what my big mistakes were.   • Easy Crustless Quiche

    This is a fantastic recipe that is easily adapted to whatever you really love in your quiche.

    7 egg whites;
    1.5 C skim milk
    (for quiche shown)
    Add 1 C chopped vidalia onion (sauteed in oil first)
    1 chopped red pepper (sauteed with onion)
    1 10 oz. box of spinach (also sauteed)

    Heat oven to 450 and bake for 15 minutes; reduce heat to 375 for an additional 30 minutes. During the last 15 mins. add approximately 2 C of sharp cheddar cheese.

    This will yield approximately 6 large pieces, amounting to around 110 calories per piece.
