Food Intervention

Quite simply, my eating this past week was awful, simply awful.  If there was ever a week when there was zero planning, this was it.  Most of you know by now I tend to stay away on an “off” week.  I decided that maybe I can learn from my mistakes by posting this week and share with you what my big mistakes were. Race Day!

This morning was our fourth run of the season – a 5 miler for my son (age 17) and a 2 miler for me.  At first, I thought I was skimping out on a “real” race, but I really liked the 2 miles a lot better than the normal 5K.  First of all, my strength lies in my first mile, so by the time I get to the third mile in a 5K, I’ve been done for a long time!

I did train more this week than normal to get prepared.  Earlier in the week, I noticed a nagging pain in my right ankle and knee, which I wasn’t to happy with.  I’m wearing the same shoes, running the same path, and now I had this pain.  I kept at it though and even through the pain, I was feeling pretty strong. Say Your Prayers, Then Stomp It Out

It’s been a couple of weeks since I posted, life has a way of getting in my way sometimes.  My youngest child has started the school year as a high school senior and I ended up purchasing a new car, which took the better of one of my weeks (evenings).  Often, when I’m running, I come up with a title for my blog, but then the content I want to write about doesn’t quite match, or vice versa, I have some great content, but can’t come up with a title.  I’ve struggled with some writer’s block for the past couple of weeks as well.  But I’m back!

Press On, Lean In

I had a crazy week this week.  The first half was me stressing at work and realizing I’m neurotic by nature, and the last part of the week was taking my son back to college and driving round trip 950+ miles in two days.  Not the best week ever, although the driving time gave me lots of time to ponder things.

I had made a conscious effort earlier this week to start concentrating on what I eat more.  I’m moving away from anything processed and cutting out refined white sugar.  I made the move several years ago and cut out a lot of white flour trading it in for whole grain so that part is easy.  I pulled out my “Kind Life” book again and started looking at recipes.   (more…)

Learning To Love It

As has been a pattern, I haven’t run for two weeks since my last race.  I attribute this to pure laziness, as well as the fact that Cleveland weather has been in the 90s with high humidity every single day this summer.  After working all day, the last thing I want to do is come home, don my running clothes and hit the pavement in 94 degree weather.   (more…)

Up And Running

Yesterday was my third race of the season.  We ran Angels from Maria which is an organization that works with a rare type of pediatric brain tumor.  All along the route there were posters of children and their dates of birth and death and the children who were still battling the disease; it was really quite heartbreaking.

I had my doubts Friday night about even running.  Still nursing my back injury, I had gone out to see “Hairspray,” which my older son was working (lighting) and had gotten home later than my 10 PM bedtime curfew.  Since I had set my alarm for 5:30 a.m., I knew Saturday morning was going to be rough.  On top of that, I went to bed again with the heating beanie.   (more…)

This Part of Me

Have you ever had a series of events that happen and then you look back at them together and realize a big message was in there?  I’ve had that happen the past couple of weeks – all the events separately mean little, but strung alongside each other came together with a big message for me.

Both my father and ex father-in-law are sick with terminal illnesses and both are in the stages of denial.  My son and I were talking about this and he commented, “like everyone else in our family, he’s in denial.”  I told him I’m not in denial about my life at all.  At the time, the statement was true, or so I thought.   (more…)

Work It, Girl!

I know my dedicated readers are dying to know if I kept my last seven days of goals.  I’ve mentioned before I tend to be “all or nothing,” so this week ended up being very balanced, I’m happy to tell you.  I managed five out of seven days of exercise.  That’s a HUGE improvement for me.  Instead of being a weekend warrior and killing myself, and feeling like I am starting over again, I managed to be consistent this week.  I am not going to tell you it was easy, but I really didn’t give myself any choice about at least pushing myself as hard I could.

Fakin’, lettuce and tomato – my summertime favorite. Soy bacon, homegrown tomatoes and lettuce, all on oat bran bread.

I focused this week on whole foods and nothing out of a box, which makes a big difference.  I took caprese salad one day to work for lunch, which is simple and delicious.  The basil was from my yard, the tomatoes were homegrown and fresh mozzarella is always delicious and filling.

Breaking Bad

It’s been two weeks without running, or any kind of physical exercise and I was coming up with all sorts of excuses:  my foot injury (ice it and move on); it’s too hot (there’s always the gym); I’m too tired (exercise will help that); stress at work (again, exercise helps stress) and in general, just feeling very sloth-like at the end of the day or (as I told myself) too busy on the weekends to do anything.  I know enough that I don’t feel good when I don’t exercise!

Ironically, even though I wasn’t running, my foot injury crept back and hit me hard.  I did ice, wore proper shoes to support my arch, and it’s fine again.  No excuse this morning about avoiding the running trail. (more…)

Shadow of the Day

It’s been two weeks since my last race and alas, two weeks since I’ve run.  I had intended on running last week when I was struck with a nasty stomach virus over the Memorial Day weekend.  I haven’t been that sick for probably five or six years.  The only plus side was that food didn’t even look appealing and I dropped a couple of pounds (always trying to find the positive)!

This is a fantastic recipe that is easily adapted to whatever you really love in your quiche.

    7 egg whites;
    1.5 C skim milk
    (for quiche shown)
Add 1 C chopped vidalia onion (sauteed in oil first)
1 chopped red pepper (sauteed with onion)
1 10 oz. box of spinach (also sauteed)

Heat oven to 450 and bake for 15 minutes; reduce heat to 375 for an additional 30 minutes. During the last 15 mins. add approximately 2 C of sharp cheddar cheese.

This will yield approximately 6 large pieces, amounting to around 110 calories per piece.
